Amplifi Alien AmpliFi Alien Wifi 6 Router by Ubiquiti Labs VideoAmpliFi Alien WiFi 6 Router Review (VS Netgear Orbi AX6000/RBK852) AmpliFi Alien comes with /5 GHz Wi-Fi 6 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 radios. They deliver Mbps total capacity and 16 spatial streams from a single AmpliFi Alien unit. Easily mesh multiple units over the air to build virtually unlimited Wi-Fi capacity in your home. Very disappointed with the Alien. I received the unit today and I’m asking for a refund and will go back to my HD. 2 reasons: one of my device is not connecting no mater what I do. reach advertised as twice is way wrong. My AmpliFi Alien is running the latest firmware as are my iOS devices and the Tablo device. I've rebooted and restarted everything several times to no avail. I've also deleted the apps on my iPhone and iPad and reinstall them. To me, it sounds like a security problem from the Router over my home network. The router is set up to use WPA2-PSK. The AmpliFi Alien and its accompanying mesh point are each stout black cylinders with rings of yellowy green light around the base. You'd be forgiven for mistaking either of them for a smart. Once I set up this AmpliFi Alien router and ran a speed test, I received mb up and mb down on my iPhone 11 Pro Max. Which is much better than the Spectrum provided router. The digital screen is nice to show what’s connected (wired/wireless) and other important information.
Other routers competing with the Alien don't offer anything quite like it. But the Alien's missing a few things, too.
For starters, it doesn't include a multigig Ethernet jack capable of accepting incoming wired speeds any faster than 1Gbps.
On top of that, one of its two 5GHz bands only supports Wi-Fi 5, which undercuts some of the tri-band appeal. Those are both high-end quibbles, but legitimate ones at this price.
Still, the Alien gets enough right that breaking the bank on it doesn't seem like such an out-of-this-world idea.
I like it best as a standalone router, and would rather go with Netgear Orbi 6 if I were looking to spend big on a truly top-of-the-line mesh setup.
And keep in mind that a number of new, less expensive mesh systems that support Wi-Fi 6 are set to hit stores in the coming months. But if you want a fancy, feature-rich router with plenty of horsepower and support for Wi-Fi 6, the Alien fits the bill.
The AmpliFi Alien and its accompanying mesh point are each stout black cylinders with rings of yellowy green light around the base.
Still, the hardware looks good, and I appreciate that the vertical design sits the array of antennas at the top of each device, where they'll perform their best higher is always better when it comes to antenna placement.
You'll hardly use the router's LCD touchscreen, but it's still nice to be able to see the time at a glance, as well as the occasional reminder to download the latest firmware update whenever one is ready to go.
Along with the WAN port on the bottom of the router, you'll find four spare gigabit Ethernet ports on the back. A Night Mode feature can also automatically dim them down to your preferred setting during evening hours.
I'm also happy to see a growing number of routers offering a simplified setup experience, and the Alien is no exception.
Just plug it in, connect it to your modem with an Ethernet cable, connect to its network, and open the AmpliFi app on your Android or iOS device and if you'd prefer it, there's a web interface, too.
You'll give your network a name and a password and be up and running within minutes. Adding the mesh point is just as easy, complete with a signal strength indicator in the app and on the device itself to help make sure you've picked a good spot for it.
You'll find plenty of control over how your network operates in the AmpliFi app, as well as the option of generating a code that lets you route your web traffic back to your home network whenever you're traveling.
Before I get to the speed test data, a few words about Ubiquiti's approach here. By default, the AmpliFi Alien combines its three bands -- a 2.
That gives you some nice control over how you use the Alien in your home, but the lack of two distinct Wi-Fi 6 bands means that your options all come with compromises.
For instance, the system is designed to send its backhaul transmissions between the router and satellite on the faster, Wi-Fi 6 5GHz band.

Using any AmpliFi device will tie your network to Ubiquiti, K, and all that implies. Hey man. Great article. I had a question. My walls are plaster so my primary bedroom has spotty signal.
I wanted to know the best plug in extender you think I should use. The Netgear will work, Matt. Just take your time and set it up properly.
It will give you the option to use the same SSID, good luck! Thank you for the very informative review! A quick question about methodology.
For your tests with Wifi 5 clients, did you use the 5ghz Wifi 6 radio high band or the separate Wifi 5 radio low band , or both?
Using a lower- or higher-band channel makes no difference in speed, B. And yes, I use them all for testing. More here. Thank you for the quick reply!
My understanding is that the Wifi 5 chip is turned off by default and needs to be enabled in settings. It can then be set to a separate SSID.
Just curious if you included this particular variable in your testing. Thank you Dong for the great review of this masterpiece, I am very impressed of the quality, look and display screen of this unit.
I have wired the house to be ready for networking as I am planing to hardwire all my 20 devices to a switch and router.
You can then take advantage of the Link Aggregation and other features. OK, I will go for the Asus as main router and two aliens as a mesh, which Asus should I go for RT-AX86U or GT-AX?
No, Sam! So, go with an AiMesh of your choice, more here. Or go full Alien. NAS and all other devices will be hard wired to Asus and the switch connected to it, aliens will also be backhaul connected to it as well.
More on that in this post. Forgive my lack of knowledge, I thought the aliens would work as access points, as if I used two ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 with GT-AX as a main.
Yes, it would, Sam. But yes, it will work as an AP. Dong I really love the work you do and how you explain things.
I am looking at purchasing the Alien A. Will my synology NAS work well with the Alien? At least for now. I actually addressed that in the review.
Trying to decide between the Amplifi Alien vs Synology Mesh. Which would provide better range, a single Alien or two MRac in mesh configuration?
Home is two floors with sf. But an Alien-based mesh will for sure. But, in that case, you might want to wait until my review on its mesh portion first.
Or you can get a single Alien router now and see how it works out. Actually looks like I found a reply in their forums, they would be able to add DFS bands and they are discussing it internally, so a possibility at least.
How would you compare the Amplifi Alien vs the Arris Surfboard Max Pro in terms of reliability, stability and range? Thank you! As a single router, both have the same range, Dale.
Is it possible for them to enable Mhz band in a firmware update, or does the hardware simply not support it?
The unit is running right now, nothing on it, f fan rpm 0. I remember the fan was showing before the crash. Is it possible that the fan is dead and the unit over heated?
UI-AmpliFi I did nothing. Was in a Zoom conference call, then the network went down. I just checked is the latest update is available, nothing.
My HD unit did get the 3. I was under the impression that the checking for the update caused the freezing of the unit because my HD received it.
For some strange reason, the roll back of the firmware is impossible on the Alien it is not showing on the web interface. Works fine on the HD unit!
UI-AmpliFi another thing, I cannot roll back the firmware. I also, upon support recommendation, got an RMA. I still hope that the Alien is a good unit, and I was just unlucky with a "bad" unit Decided to get a new unit.
Wow, this one works fine so far. Totally a different experience than the previous one. Almost 24 hr without a Reboot, installed two upgrade 3.
